Faith Like Moses

Hello my adorable Thinkers!

A quick disclaimer: Please keep in mind that these are my opinions from what I see in Scripture and not what I think everyone should do. If God has led you in a different direction or to a different conclusion, that is between you and Him.

What is faith according to the Bible? There are many different ways that faith is defined according to different groups, religions, and beliefs. Looking at the way faith is first used in the Bible gives some context with which define it.

Faith in Hebrew is אֱמוּנָה (emunah). אֱמוּנָה (Emunah) has a few different ways it has been translated throughout the Tenach (Old Testament): firmness; steadiness; steadfastness; faithfulness; and trust. The first place this word is used is in Exodus 17:12 “And Moses’ hands were heavy. So they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat on it; and Aaron and Hur supported his hands, one on one side and one on the other. So his hands were steady until the sun set.” I find it very interesting that this is the place God decided to introduce the concept of faith. The context of that verse talks about how if Moses let his hands fall the Amalekites would prevail in the battle but if he kept his hands up the Israelites would prevail.

This means that faith according to the Bible is staying firm and steady in something. Any time we are standing firmly we are demonstrating faith. But long-term faith cannot be achieved alone, instead we need people to come alongside us and hold us up that we may not lose our strength and let our “hands” drop. Then when the sun sets and that “battle” in our life is over, maybe it will be our turn to hold someone else up, so that they can also remain faithful.

May we all have people who will hold up our hands when we are wavering and always turn us toward God no matter what is happening in our life. If you are one of those people to me or to someone you know, thank you. You are a warrior for God just as much as those who are actively fighting.

  2. Interesting too, to know it has been puzzled over by Jewish and Christian scholars alike for millenia concerning the line telling of Moses hands being held steady, as the direct transaltion sees it as not ‘steady’, but his hands were held ‘faith’, holding faith? became symbolically or otherwise ‘faith’? hands held in faith? But the word usually translated as ‘Steady’ and variations thereof, actually said in THIS instance regarding Moses, mysteriously ‘faith’.
